Sony has just announced two new FE lenses for its Alpha E mount cameras. The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens completes the ‘trinity’ of f/2.8 lenses from 16-200mm lenses now covered by the 16-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. Meanwhile the FE 12-24mm f/4.0 lens is the widest full frame Sony lens available for the system.
Much of the criticism of Sony’s full frame A7, and now A9, camera line-up has been squarely focused on the lack of lens options particularly at wide angle and telephoto focal lengths. The addition of these two new lenses should hopefully put an end to that argument.
The FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens will provide the f/2.8 aperture that many photographers have been asking for. However, it remains to be seen whether optically it is better than the 16-35mm f/4 at it peak resolution.
Whilst both of the lenses should prove popular for landscape photographers, they should also appeal to videographers. The 12-14mm f/4 lens that will provide an extremely wide angle of view that will no doubt appeal to vloggers who want to make sure they are always in the frame, particularly as the Alpha camera don’t have front facing screens.
The FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens start shipping in Europe from August 2017 priced at approximately £2,300. The FE 12-24mm f/4 lens ill start shipping in Europe from July 2017 priced at approximately £1,700.
