Today, Sigma announces a new fast wide lens for Sony E-mount and Micro Four Thirds – the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN, joining the Contemporary lineup.
It’s the first lens for Sony E-mount that offers a 24mm focal length in 35mm equivalent terms and an f/1.4 maximum aperture. The Micro Four Thirds version offers a 32mm focal length in 35mm equivalent terms, with the same maximum aperture of f/1.4.
This lens is the second in the firm’s range of lenses for mirrorless systems, the first being the 30mm F1.4 released in 2016. It’s structured with 16 elements in 13 groups, and Sigma promises it will effectively minimise optical aberrations.
The construction includes three FLD glass elements, two SLD glass elements and two moulded glass aspherical elements – these later elements include ultra-high-precision surfaces that are (we’ll hand over to Sigma here) “surfaces polished to tolerances under 10 nanometres, minimizing the onion ring bokeh effect that some aspherical elements produce and ensuring clear image quality throughout the frame.”
The optical system is also structured to gently bend light, minimising sagittal coma flare and delivering edge-to-edge sharpness. The result – sharp images, beautiful bokeh.
The lens also features a stepping motor, which provides smooth and quiet autofocus and makes it well suited for video. The E-mount version is designed to work with Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF.
It’s got a dust- and splash-proof design, a nine-bladed aperture, and comes with a supplied lens hood.
The Sigma lens roadmap is promising a telephoto in the future, creating a comprehensive system for mirrorless users.
