We rate the Fujilfilm GFX 50S very highly, so any chance to pair it with existing (and cheaper) glass is an enticing prospect. Cue the Techart EF-GFX autofocus adaptor - the first of its kind.
The adaptor has been tested by Techart with ‘modern’ Canon and Sigma branded EF-mount lenses. It offers most the features you would expect from a lens as if it was directly connected to the camera.
Not only does the adaptor accept Canon EF-mount lenses, but it enables in-body aperture control, autofocus and image-stabilisation for those equipped with it. The adaptor also records key EXIF data, including exposure information.
Techart claims the performance of autofocus in AF-S mode is ‘satisfactory’. If the promotional videos are anything to go by, AF seems reasonable and the adaptor looks like a really interesting product.
Of course, we can only comment how effective the autofocus and optical stabilisation of the lens is through the adaptor once we have our hands on the product, which we hope will be soon.
China-based Techart adds this adaptor to its PRO Leica M to Sony E adaptor, which is an innovative autofocus adaptor for manual focus lenses.
Techart EF-GFX autofocus adaptor: lens compatibility
The flange distance of the Fujifilm GFX 50S is short which makes it well suited for lens adaptors. However, its sensor is of course designed for Fujifilm’s medium format lenses.
Canon EF lenses are compatible with the Techart EF-GFX adaptor, but not all such lenses have an imaging circle wide enough to cover the GFX 50S sensor. At this stage, Techart does not have a list of those lenses that fully cover the sensor and those that do not.
However, Techart has informed us that after testing many Canon EF lenses, it found most lenses with a focal length of 50mm or longer (full-frame) cover the sensor, with no vignetting.

Techart EF-GFX autofocus adaptor: More features to come
There are further features in the pipeline that will be made available through a firmware upgrade. These include support for AF-C mode and video AF. Firmware upgrades are made by connecting the adaptor to a computer via its micro USB port.
